SEC Basketball Power Rankings

Ryan McCormick

Just three weeks remain in conference play and with a number of teams on the bubble still this will be a crucial stretch for a lot of SEC teams. A big weekend in conference play this past weekend has a lot of shake up in the rankings. See where each team falls this week below!

14. Vanderbilt 9-16 (0-12)

It's been a rough year for Vanderbilt and that continued on Saturday when they were hanging with Auburn for most of the game before throwing it away late. There isn't much Vandy can shoot for at this point other than just trying to win a conference game.

13. Georgia 10-15 (1-11)

Georgia had it's biggest win of the season this week and it wasn't on the court. It was when 5* prospect Anthony Edwards committed to the Dawgs. Other than that there hasn't been many bright spots in Athens under first year head coach Tom Crean.

12. Texas A&M 10-14 (3-9)

Texas A&M has won 2 of their last three after starting out 1-8 in conference play but it's probably too little too late. Unless a miracle can happen in the SEC tournament the Aggies will be sitting at home in March.

11. Missouri 12-12 (3-9)

Missouri, like Texas A&M really have no hope at making the tournament this year, their best conference win was over Texas A&M which isn't saying much, other than that it has been a pretty disappointing season in Columbia.

10. Arkansas 14-11 (5-7)

I don't wanna say Arkansas is completely out of the tournament yet but they would need a lot of help to make it. They have games against Kentucky, Ole Miss and Auburn still which could add some much needed quality to their resume but unless they can win 5/6 and a few in the SEC tournament they will have a good chance at winning the NIT this year.

9. Alabama 15-10 (6-6)

A disappointing week for the tide, coming in near the bubble and dropping two big games to two other bubble teams won't help your cause. Luckily for the tide they have Texas A&M and Vanderbilt this week which should be two somewhat easy wins to get the tide back on track.

8. Mississippi State 18-7 (6-6)

One of the more disappointing teams this year after coming into conference play at 12-1 the Bulldogs have gone just 6-6 in SEC play. The Bulldogs have to travel to Auburn and Tennessee still but besides that the remaining 4 games should all be winnable. 22 wins in the SEC should get you in the tournament and at this point they'll just be playing for a better seed.

7. Florida 14-11 (6-6)

Florida, like Mississippi State has had a disappointing season so far but coming off of probably their best week of the year beating Vanderbilt and Alabama the Gators may be in position to get hot at just the right time. Florida has LSU twice still and Kentucky once, winning one of those three and sweeping the UGA/Mizzou/vandy could put them in a good spot come Selection Sunday.

6. South Carolina 13-12 (8-4)

South Carolina is a quiet team at 8-4 in conference play. had they played better in non conference play or beat a Tennessee or Kentucky once or twice they may be in a better spot, but just 1 game over .500 makes it hard for me to see them making the tournament but crazy things have happened and they could make a run in the SEC tournament.

5. Auburn 17-8 (6-6)

Auburn is one of the hardest teams to figure out. The Tigers live and die by the 3 and when its on they are hard to beat as they showed by taking Duke and Kentucky both down to the wire, but when its off its tough for them to win games. sitting at 6-6 isn't what they had in mind but they have Kentucky and Tennessee still left on the schedule which could really help their seeding in March.

4. Ole Miss 18-7 (8-4)

Coming into the season very few people had the Rebels finishing in the top 10 let alone the top 4. Ole Miss has been one of the biggest surprises in the SEC this year and will most likely be playing in March. Ole Miss has Tennessee and Kentucky still on the schedule and if they can win one of those and make a run in the SEC tournament you could see the Rebels as a top 5 seed.

3. LSU 21-4 (11-1)

This was a tough one because LSU knocked off Kentucky earlier in the week but with what Kentucky did on Saturday I had to put them ahead of the Tigers since the LSU win was so close and controversial. LSU still is one of the best teams in the league and could be a sleeper in the SEC Tournament to knock off Tennessee and Kentucky.

2. Tennessee 23-2 (11-1)

A lot of people had Tennessee as their #1 team in the nation coming into Saturday but a complete domination by Kentucky has people questioning this team. The Vols have never been in this position before and some question if they can handle the unprecedented success. It will be interesting to see how they respond with 4 of their remaining 6 games against teams in the top 5 of this list.

1. Kentucky 21-4 (10-2)

I have doubted Kentucky for most of the year but they have finally hit their stride and the win over Tennessee shows that they are a serious national championship contender. This may be the best team in Lexington since the Anthony Davis team that went all the way and they are going to be tough to beat in March.
