Commodores upend Rebels 82-69

Mitch Davis

Oxford: Senior night festivities came to an abrupt halt when the Vanderbilt Commodores came to town to face a down and out Ole Miss Rebel team. Ole Miss has struggled all season long with heart and grit and tonight seemed to be the breaking point with the Rebels. However, Vanderbilt came out shooting lights out with 52.7% from the field behind 12 three pointers the Commodores finally played to the potential they have had all year. Vanderbilt will look to carry this momentum into Wednesday nights SEC tournament match up with the Georgia Bulldogs. Ole Miss will head into the SEC tournament as the 14th seed and will face the South Carolina Gamecocks a team who the Rebels beat on New Years Eve in Oxford 74-69.

Key Stats:

Vanderbilt: 82- 12-19, 6-12 SEC

29-55 (52.7%) FG, 12-24 ( 50%) 3FG, 12-15 (80%) FT, 33 rebounds.

Ole Miss: 69- 12-19, 5-13 SEC

26-61 (42.6%) FG, 2-12 (16.7) 3FG. 15-19 (78.9%) FT, 32 Rebounds

Player of the game:

Vanderbilt:

Jeff Roberson- 5-12 FG, 2-5 3FG, 7-8 FT, 7 rebounds, 19 points, 40 min

Both teams have a lot to prove in St. Louis and have the potential to make a run in the SEC tournament, the key is to not give up on the season and keep grinding and shock the world. Vanderbilt especailly is one of those teams that can make a run in the SEC tournament and pull some massive upsets behind the leadership of Jeff Roberson and Riley LaChance. One thing is for certain no matter what happens the SEC tournament is bound to be thrilling.
