It was a battle for the ages between the two Tigers to see who could reign supreme. Both Clemson and LSU exchanged punches early in the first quarter.
Clemson struck first after a 67-yard drive capped off with one-yard run from Trevor Lawrence to make it 7-0 Clemson with 6:34 to play in the first.
LSU answered the Clemson punch with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Chase Ja'marr with 2:20 left in the first.
Following the touchdown from LSU, Clemson came out and jumped to a 17-7 lead over LSU.
However, that lead was short-lived, LSU fired back with 21 unanswered points to take a 28-17 lead to halftime.
At the half, Joe Burrow had 270 yards and three touchdowns.
Burrows 270 yards was only a fraction of the 359 total yards put up by the LSU offense. The 359 first-half yards set a school record for a championship game.
On the other side of the field, Trevor Lawrence threw for 176 yards and zero touchdowns.
Clemson and LSU were like two heavyweight boxers going for all twelve rounds before LSU came out with the final round knockout punch of the evening to win their fourth national championship, a first for Coach O.
The final knockout punch came with 12:08 left in the game with an incredible catch from Joe Burrow to Terrance Marshall to put the LSU Tigers ahead 42-25.
The difference-maker in the game was the 12th man that the LSU fans created. The Superdome was filled rafter to rafter in purple and gold and could be heard all across the country. The LSU faithful was rewarded with the playing of " Neck," a crowd favorite. The song came after the touchdown with 12:08 to play that put LSU on top 42-25.
Joe Burrow solidified himself as the greatest quarterback in program history with his performance against Clemson. Burrow threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns.
This LSU team will not only go down in school folklore, but it will also go down as one of the most intriquing college football stories of all-time.
With the LSU win, the SEC will finish bowl season with an 8-2 record, which easily wins the conference the bowl challenge. The SEC also will close the bowl season with a 3-1 record over the ACC.
