A Sigh of Relief for Pittsburgh as the Pens Win 3-1

Blaze Martonick

This game was a nail biter for Penguins fans especially because if they lost tonight they would have been facing elimination in every remaining game and it also would have meant their rivals the Capitals would advance. As a Penguins fan myself, watching this game was crazy. It took one goal to change the Pittsburgh Penguins attitude of the game and here's what happened:

10:39 into the first period, Dominik Simon put a rebound shot off of Braden Holtby, and Guentzel swept the puck in and out of the net to open the scoring giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. About 3 minutes later, the Capitals got a much needed power play which led to a few passes before Nicklas Backstrome set up TJ Oshie for a one time as he got enough elevation on the puck to put it over the shoulder of Murray, sending the game in a tie to the second.

2:28 left in the second, and Phil Kessel gets the slightest pass through the defense to Patric Hornqvist who missed the net before Evgeni Malkin was able to put the puck in the back of the net. After a quick review to see if it went in, and if there was goaltender interference, the goal stood which gave the Penguins a crucial lead going into the third period. After getting hit in the collarbone and taking hits, Matt Murray played through and backstopped the Pens. Sidney Crosby flipped a pass to Guentzel who will seal the game with an empty net goal, sending the series back to Washington in a 2-2 tie.
