Super Tuesday in the SEC Preview

Mitch Davis

Super Tuesday is set to take off in the SEC with several interesting match-ups and questions after a wild weekend in the Conference. Teams like Auburn and Tennessee look to carry momentum from Saturday’s huge eleven point wins over Kentucky and Arkansas. While on the flip side Kentucky, and Vanderbilt both look to bounce back at home against two quality teams in Tennessee and Texas A&M.

Without further ado here are the four Super Tuesday matchups in the SEC:

South Carolina vs Alabama: ( 6pm SECNetwork)

We start with an early matchup in Tuscaloosa with Alabama playing host to South Carolina. Alabama is lacking identity so far this season with starting conference play (1-2) with a huge 22 point win over Texas A&M but have dropped two straight since that win in Tuscaloosa. Crimson Tide fans are high off a national championship in football but want a competitive basketball team that will at least make the NCAA tournament. With a win tonight that would give the Crimson Tide some kind of momentum heading into a Saturday road test at LSU.

Key players to watch:

Alabama: Collin Sexton- Freshman guard, 20 points a game, 3.4 rebounds

South Carolina: Chris Silva- Junior Guard, 14 points a game, 23 min per game

Prediction: I’m going with Alabama tonight I think they will cover the four point spread and win a very important home conference game. Alabama 75- South Carolina 68

Texas A&M vs Kentucky: ( 6pm ESPN)

Kentucky and Texas A&M square off Tuesday night at Rupp Arena in a must win for both squads. Both squads are coming into the game with a lot of questions especially the Aggies who started conference play 0-3 after climbing all the way into top five. However Kentucky is not out of the woodshed after dropping an embarrassing road loss at Tennessee. The Wildcats have lacked effort and heart all season and until that is fixed Kentucky will continue to drop winnable games in conference play.

Key players to watch:

Kentucky: Wenyen Gabriel- Sophomore Forward 6.7 points a game, 6 rebounds a game

Texas A&M: Tyler Davis- Junior Center, 14 points a game, 8.4 rebounds a game

Prediction: Kentucky will win this at home, the Aggies will drop to 0-4 in conference play. Kentucky 70- Texas A&M 60

Ole Miss vs Auburn: (8pm ESPNU)

Both the Rebels and the Tigers are coming off impressive home wins and coming into this game with a lot of momentum. The Rebels are fighting for their life’s wanting to compete for an NCAA Tournament bid. The Tigers are coming into this game 14-1 overall and a heavy 10 point favorite over the Rebels. Bruce Pearl’s team looks poised to make the tournament this year as an at- large team. The match-up is interesting is interesting as it will likely go down to the wire.

Key players to watch:

Auburn: Mustapha Heron- Sophomore guard, 16 points a game, 5.6 rebounds per game

Ole Miss: Breein Tyree- Sophomore guard, 9.5 points a game, 2.3 rebounds per game

Prediction: I’m going with Auburn in the home win tonight. 72 Auburn- 61 Ole Miss

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt ( 8pm SECNetwork)

Battle on broadway in the Rocky Top State will take place Tuesday night in Nashville. Tennessee is coming off an upset over the Kentucky Wildcats, while Vanderbilt is coming off an 11 point road loss at South Carolina. The Commodores won the matchup in on the gridiron and I see them getting a win at home Tuesday night. Tennessee is the better team, but as everyone has seen after an emotional high win over Kentucky the Volunteers will likely come out flat which is a scary thought against a feisty Vanderbilt team.

Key players to watch:

Vanderbilt: Riley LaChance- senior guard, 11 points a game, 2.7 rebounds a game

Tennessee: Grant Williams- Sophomore Forward, 16 points a game, 6.8 rebounds a game

Prediction: In a game that is bound to be an instant classic in this great Rivalry, I am taking the Vanderbilt Commodores at home tonight. Behind a huge game from guys like Riley LaChance, Jeff Roberson, and Matthew Fisher- Davis. The Commodores are bound to pull off an upset before the game against Kentucky on Saturday. 74-71 Vanderbilt
