Bowl Season Quick Recap, Part 1

Ryan McCormick

It really is the most wonderful time of the year, bowl season. We are about a week in to bowl season this year and while there haven't been any top 25 match ups there have still been plenty of good games. As bowl season really starts to pick up here in the next few weeks I will give you a quick recap of everything that has happened so far. Starting out I'll go over the first 5 games of the bowl season and as games wrap up this weekend I will be adding more posts featuring those games, so if the game you're looking for isn't on this list don't worry it will come

R+L Carriers Bowl: Troy-50, North Texas-30

The first game of the bowl season got off to a hot start in a shootout between two of the better mid majors this season. Troy coming in with that win over LSU that everyone remembers and North Texas finishing 2nd in their conference this season. Troy came out hot early but North Texas cut the lead down to 2 at half before being outscored 28-10 by Troy in the second half leading to an eventaual victory for the Trojans. Troy QB Brandon SIlvers had himself quite a game finishing 24/31 with 305 yards and 4 TD's. Troy finished the season 11-2 while North Texas fell to 9-5 with the loss.

Autonation Cure Bowl: Georgia State-27, Western Kentucky-17

Georgia State finished off an impressive season with their first bowl game in school history. It is only the Panthers 3rd season in the FBS and to win a bowl game so quickly is very impressive. This game like the first one was close for much of the first half before Georgia State started to slowly pull away in the second half before eventually pulling off the 10 point victory. Georgia State finished the season at 7-5 with the win and Western Kentucky fell to 6-7.

Las Vegas Bowl: Boise State-38, Oregon-28

The first game of the bowl season featuring a ranked team in 25th ranked Boise State. Oregon came in to this game with a lot of distraction with their coach Willie Taggart leaving for FSU and the result of that distraction showed in the 10 point loss. Boise State shot out to a hot start leading by 14 after the first quarter and then by 10 at half. Oregon made a few runs at it but the Bronco's offense couldn't be stopped, eventually racking up nearly 500 yards and 38 points. Boise State finished another impressive season at 11-3 and Oregon finished at 7-6.

Gildan New Mexico Bowl: Marshall-31, Colorado State-28

One of the most exciting games in the bowl season so far. This game wasn't as close for most of the game as some of the others had been. Marshall got off to a 21-14 halftime lead and looked to have put the game away with a pair of 3rd quarter scores to get up 31-14 but Colorado State made a late comeback attempt with a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns before falling just short 31-28. Marshall was Keion Davis who finished with 141 yards rushing and Tyre Brady who had 165 yards receiving.

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl: Mid Tennessee State-35, Arkansas State-30

This game featured a pair of mid majors who came in with 6 wins and 7 wins a piece. MSTU started off hot in this game taking a 21-10 halftime lead over Arkansas State. The Red Wolves made a late push with a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns but came just short as the Blue Raiders were able to hit a late field goal and hold on defense late. Middle Tennessee State finished at 7-6 while Arkansas State is now at 7-5.
